Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

CATHIE ZELAS —

This year we are excited to be introducing the PB4L Framework to Halswell School. A major theme that emerged from the recent community consultation was the importance of equipping students with strategies for managing their behaviour and a school environment that enables them to thrive. PB4L will help us strengthen both these aspects.

PB4L stands for ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’. This is an initiative being introduced to schools by the Ministry of Education and is aimed at improving behaviour and learning. It is a research-based initiative that is designed to enhance our school climate and culture by explicitly teaching and acknowledging positive behaviours. It is a highly regarded programme that is already used by over 800 schools throughout New Zealand.

An important early part of the implementation of PB4L is developing a purpose statement for our school. This is the Halswell School PB4L Purpose Statement:

Positive Behaviour for Learning - Why?

The purpose of PB4L at Halswell School is to promote a safe, supportive environment and respectful, mana enhancing relationships across the school to support all learners to thrive.

PB4L supports the development of consistent approaches and systems across the entire school which promote a positive culture and learning environment. PB4L also supports and promotes our school values.

PB4L is our major focus for staff professional development throughout this year and into 2022. As such, staff will be engaged in a PB4L workshop on the upcoming Staff Only Day. The focus for the day will be developing a matrix of expected behaviour at Halswell School linked to our new school values.
