Find out what is happening in our library

The library has been a super busy place in these first few weeks of the year! The children are obviously excited about being back in our wonderful bookish space again. There are lots of games being played, pictures being coloured in and books being read at lunchtime. Later this term I look forward to welcoming you into the library for our first Whānau Night at the Library.

2023 Student Librarians

I had just over 100 applications for children who wanted to become Student Librarians this year. While this is fantastic to have so many children interested in becoming librarians, it is also a difficult task to choose just a few of them. I only had 13 spaces for new librarians this year, so unfortunately, many children have missed out. For those who weren't chosen, there is still a possibility to become a Library Champion, and I will be talking to these children later this week. If you want to talk more about your child missing out on being a librarian, please come and see me in the library or flick me an email.

Congratulations to those children who were chosen as Student Librarians. I look forward to working with you this year.

Book Bingo

You may have seen your children bringing home a Book Bingo sheet. These are reading challenges that I run in the library, designed to get the children reading a wide range of books. There are 3 levels - Bronze,  Silver, and Gold. They get progressively harder and should take at least a couple of weeks to complete. The Bronze level is ideal for Years 1-4 as the challenges include things like reading in your pyjamas and reading to a stuffed toy or pet. When children have completed the challenge sheet and crossed each one off, they return it to me in the library and receive a certificate and a badge.

Your children may need help completing some of the challenges, either from you or me. If you have any questions about Book Bingo please ask - zac.mccallum@halswell.school.nz
