Lions' Christchurch Schools' Music Festival

Madeleine Gillman —

After 2 years of cancellations due to Covid-19, the Lions' Christchurch Schools' Music Festival is back!

For eight decades, the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival has been an icon in the cultural life of Christchurch young people.

The largest annual event in the South Island dedicated to developing young musical talent, the Festival inspires the children of Canterbury to participate at the highest level in musical performance, both vocal and instrumental, fostering a lifelong passion for music. On Thursday 3rd November, 32 Halswell singers will join a massed choir of over 800 students from 21 schools across Canterbury.

The Festival combines a massed choir, Junior and Senior Representative Choirs, the Concert Band and Orchestra to present a high-quality concert.

3 talented musicians will also represent Halswell this year at the Festival:

  • Theo and Lucy - Orchestra
  • Duncan  - Concert Band

The night of the performance:

Children need to be seated in the Town Hall by 6.30pm on Thursday the 3rd November. Please make sure you allow plenty of time for traffic and parking. We will send more information about where children will need to go when they arrive, closer to the time. Performance uniform will be issued also closer to the time. Jackets and sweatshirts should be left with parents as the children become overheated when performing under lights. Shiny jewellery and watches are not to be worn either.

The children will not come out of the performance area at half time. They will remain seated with the choir.

At the conclusion of the performance your child/ren will be able to be collected from a designated area which will be determined on the morning of the performance.

Feel free to visit the Music Festivals’ website as all the information about the rehearsals and performance nights are on there too: https://musicfestival.school.nz/
