Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week

Nicky Edwards —

This week it is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week. This is the annual campaign led by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission) to get more New Zealanders speaking, hearing, and experiencing Te Reo Māori. On Monday, as a school, we signed up to take part in the Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori, The Māori Language Moment. This initiative saw over 1 million New Zealanders speaking, singing Te Reo Māori in a celebration of what makes Aotearoa unique - Te Reo Māori.

At Te Kura o te Tauawa, Halswell School, we are continually growing and developing our Te Reo Māori, through kupu, waiata, karakia, Kapa Haka, Whānau Mornings and Mihi Whakatau. We weave Te Ao Māori and Te Reo throughout the curriculum that we explore in our kura. This week we placed a special focus on these activities with arts, crafts, quizzes, and more being explored.

At first lunch on Monday, we celebrated and joined in with Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori with a performance by our Senior Kapa Haka group. This was followed up with Kupu and Kai with Mr McCallum reading several picture books in Te Reo whilst we ate our lunch. Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori!
