🏓 Table Tennis 2022

Aaron Yang —

Captain of Table Tennis, Aaron Yang, reports on the year.

In 2022, the Waikato Table Tennis Teams Competition was played each Friday evening across Terms 2 and 3. With 10 of a total of 19 team entries coming from HBHS, the red and black uniforms dominated the vista across the 12 tables each Friday night. Our teams took away the A grade competition across both terms and placed second in the B grade, with promising new individual talents shining through in both divisions. In Term 3, the Waikato Individual Secondary Schools Championship took place with Aaron Yang taking home gold and Fraser Liao finishing fourth in the A grade, and Jayden Forshaw and Hanson Yang winning gold and bronze respectively painting a bright future for the school.

The National Championships were hosted by Hamilton this year and were again dominated by the big Auckland schools. In the team's event, our A team consisted of Aaron Yang, Fraser Liao, Chris He and Keelan Gannon. In the pool of death we lost to the two teams that went on to reach the final of the competition. This qualified us to play in the second division where we placed fifth, yet again losing to another finalist school. In the individual competition Aaron Yang, Fraser Liao and Keelan Gannon all qualified for the A grade by winning their first two matches, with Aaron and Fraser finishing in the top 8 and Keelan finishing in the top 16. The Development team consisting of Jayden Forshaw, Oscar Li, Terrence Fu and Aarya Vivekanandan dropped one match on their way to dominating the C grade competition against much older and experienced senior students.

Overall, the 2022 table tennis year was an enjoyable experience for both the competitive Friday night players and the social Monday afternoon school night players.

As Captain of Table Tennis, I hope that the players in future generations can continue to have fun playing table tennis, whether it be competitively or socially. My thanks go out to Mr Hay and Ms Ali for helping me run a successful year.
