🌏 International Students 2023

Frank Fu —

As the 2023 academic year draws to a close, we look back with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

84 feepaying students from 16 different countries were enrolled at our school this year, some for only a few weeks and others concluding their 5 years of secondary schooling at HBHS. International Student Leader Frank Fu shares his experience with us:

As an international student, my journey at HBHS has been a transformative experience that has shaped me in profound ways. I arrived in New Zealand when I was 10, and that's when the remarkable journey began. From the moment I set foot in this beautiful country, I was faced with the challenge of adapting to a new culture and education system.

In Year 9, my first year at HBHS, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The classrooms, the students, and the teaching methods were all so different from what I had been accustomed to in China. But, I was determined to embrace this new adventure with an open heart and a hunger for knowledge. My teachers quickly recognised my eagerness to learn, and they were instrumental in helping me adjust to this new academic environment.

As the years went by, I continued to push my boundaries and strive for excellence. I dedicated myself to my studies, trying to minimise the language barrier to consistently earn high grades. The support of my teachers and the camaraderie of my peers helped me navigate the lingual challenges. Beyond the classroom, I eagerly participated in extracurricular activities, joining clubs and sports teams such as the table tennis and badminton team. These experiences not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to make lasting friendships.

In Year 13, I was honoured to be elected as the International Student Leader. This role allowed me to give back to the school community that had given me so much. I became a bridge between the International students and our Kiwi classmates, working to foster understanding and unity among our diverse student body. It was a humbling experience to be entrusted with such a responsibility, and it allowed me to further develop my leadership skills.

Reflecting on my five years at HBHS, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. This journey has not only been about academic growth but also personal growth. I've learned the value of perseverance, adaptability, and the beauty of embracing change. My story is a testament to the strength of diversity, and I hope that it serves as an inspiration to all who may face similar challenges and journeys here at Hamilton Boys’ High School.
