🏴 Celebrating Our Heritage

Stefan West —

The Unveiling of the "Tū Rangatira" Mural at Argyle House.

In a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and community spirit, Argyle House proudly unveiled its new mural, "Tū Rangatira". This mural depicts a Māori warrior, reminiscent of Hotumauea, a renowned chief of Ngāti Wairere, standing atop a hill. Serving as a powerful symbol, it reminds us daily to "assume the stance of a chief," encouraging us to walk with mana and pride. Strategically positioned at the front doors of the Hostel, this mural serves as a beacon of inspiration, embodying leadership, pride, and self-improvement. It urges everyone to strive for their best selves and will continue to inspire future generations of Argyle House students for years to come.

The ceremony brought together key community members, including senior art students, Māori students and leaders, and Hostel staff. It began with mihi, karakia and waiata. The mural was then unveiled by the art students along with Senior Art teacher Mr Simmonds, who played an important role throughout the process. Afterwards, Mr McKenzie expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of this beautiful taonga to those in attendance. Matua West gave an explanation of the mural's significance and the artists shared their experience and thoughts.

Acknowledgements

Again, we would like to give a special thanks to Mr Simmonds, the talented artists, Māori leaders and Hostel participants, and Mr McKenzie for the support and funding of the event. Another thanks goes to the school's Parents Association, who provided funding for the mural. Argyle House appreciates your support throughout the process. As we admire this new artwork, let us embrace its message, stepping forward with the determination and dignity of a chief, ready to face each day at our best.
