⛳ Hamilton Boys' High School Golf has Teed Off 🏌️♂️
Two recent old boys showed anything is possible. Denzel Ieremia (2013, Great Temperament) and Tyler Wood (2017, Longest Driver) teed up alongside Steve Alker who is without doubt Hamilton Boys' High School most famous golfer in the New Zealand Golf Open.
The school golf year starts early as the Super 8 Golf Competition is always scheduled early in the term and our top 8 finishes from the School Championship take up the the eight spots for that competition. This year the school championships was played at St Andrew's on the 9th of February. This event picks our best junior golfer for 2023. Flynn ter Beek (Year 9) won the junior trophy, shooting 90 three shots ahead of Nick Seel (Year 10). Flynn was also only one shot off taking 8th place off his brother Thomas Ter Beek (Year 13), who shot 89.
The current top senior golfer is Isaac Steel (Year 11), who shot four shots better than anyone else with a 74. Isaac has made a very impressive start to the golf season which runs from Term 1 to Term 3. Isaac shone at the Foundation Golf Day, where he shot 69, beating the staff team who played four ball ambrose and had a maximum of 2 putts per green (golfers reading this will understand why maybe the staff team need to practice more and work on fitness as they bogeyed their last two holes). The 2023 Captain of Golf, Cole Tosland (Year 13), who has worked hard on his game over the last few years shot 70 and Ricci Putohe (Year 12) also shot 70 to finish only one shot behind Isaac.
The Waikato MatchPlay Championship is the next event on the calendar with 20 HBHS golfers playing 27 holes at the Te Awamutu Golf Course and then getting split into divisions based on their score. The top three mentioned above will be pushing to win the title for the first time in a long time.
Happy golfing, everybody!
