🏊️🚣🏃🚵Sports Highlights: NZ Secondary Schools and National Age Group Competitions
HBHS athletes have brought their A-game in canoe slalom, water polo, swimming, mountain biking and cross country in Term Two.
Alex Nagel - Canoe Slalom NZ Secondary Schools & NZ Nationals
During the last school holidays, Alex Nagel represented Hamilton Boys' High School at the NZ Canoe Slalom Championships held in Tekapo. Alex won a gold medal for HBHS in the K1 Under-16 Junior Men, and was also awarded the NZSS Colenso High School Trophy for K1 Under-16 Boys.
He also took out the silver medal in the K1 Intermediate Teams event with Emily Nagel (Sacred Heart) and Alise Goudswaard (Hamilton Girls' High School), and a bronze medal in the Intermediate C1 Team with Emily and Alise. Last but not least, Alex was awarded the Best Junior Paddler Trophy Under-16 Junior Men.
Alex stayed on to compete at the New Zealand Nationals, gaining valuable experience with some very good runs in Kayak Cross, but did not manage to fire on the day in the K1 event. However, he did win a silver medal for K1 Teams. Well done Alex!
Water Polo Division 2 Team - NZ Secondary Schools
We are thrilled to announce that our second water polo team secured an impressive third place at the NZSS National Water Polo Championship Division 2! This remarkable achievement is a significant improvement from their 11th place finish last year, showcasing the dedication and hard work of our athletes.
The team's outstanding defence played a pivotal role in their success, meaning they only narrowly missed out on the final. Their teamwork, determination, and skills were evident in every match, and we couldn't be prouder of their progress.
Results were as follows:
Pool games
v Whangaparāoa/Kingsway/Wentworth mixed: 12-4 win
v Westlake A2: 21-3 win
v Mount Albert Grammar: 7-4 win
Crossover games
v Christchurch Boys’ Prem B: 10-4 win
v Sacred Heart A2: 6-7 loss
Semi-final
v Mount Maunganui: 3-4 loss

Cross Country - NZ Secondary Schools
Congratulations to all our Hamilton Boys’ High School athletes who competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Whangārei recently.
Year 9 Boys Race
Daniel Mumby stormed home to win a bronze medal individually. Colin Johnston placed 18th, and Lucas Gamble finished 28th. These three combined to win bronze in the Year 9 3-man team event.
Junior Boys Race
Jack Stirling took home gold with a brilliant run. Max Stirling raced amazingly to claim an individual bronze medal, while Jacob Liu finished 40th. Jack, Max, and Jacob also claimed bronze in the Junior 3-man team competition.
NZSS Regional Relays
Our runners also represented Waikato in the Sunday relay event. Jack Stirling and Max Stirling helped secure gold in the Junior relay. Daniel Mumby and Colin Johnston earned bronze in the Year 9 relay. Lucas Gamble also ran strongly for Waikato.
Mountain Biking - North Island Secondary Schools Champs
The North Island Secondary Schools Mountain Biking Championships were held at Summerhill Park in Tauranga. Twelve students from HBHS competed across the three different events - Cross Country, Enduro and Downhill.
Standout performers were Carter Thorne (pictured receiving his silver medal) who finished 2nd out of 71 starters in the U16 Enduro race, to go with his 3rd place out of 48 starters in the U16 Downhill race. Mitchell Beveridge also came 9th in the same Downhill race as Carter, while Ethan Walkley finished with a commendable 4th place out of 47 starters in the U20 Enduro race.
Overall, it was a great weekend, with all of our riders saying they enjoyed the experience. Special thanks go to parent Chris Walkley for being Team Manager for this event.
