HBHS 1st XI Football team score late winner in a tight game

Kynan McCracken —

On Friday night the HBHS 1st XI played the Rototuna 1st XI in the 7th round of the Premier Boys Division One competition.

On a cold Friday night under the lights at Gower Park the HBHS 1st XI came up against their Rototuna counterparts.  With a chance to go two points clear at the top of the league, the boys were eager to get the job done and cement their place at the top.  We started off strong, having many chances early on and this soon paid off as Legion Rogerson found the back of the net yet again to put the team up 1 - 0.  After going close multiple times the first half ended at 1 - 0.  Although we were up we knew we had to stay switched on to stay ahead of the game.  Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration saw us concede a penalty and after Rototuna converted from the spot, the game was tied.  Just minutes later a bad tackle would see us go down to 10 men with the majority of the second half still to play.  We knew we were going to have to dig deep to get the result we wanted out of this.  Fortunately the boys rallied together and after a great cross by Sopharachwathanakh Bee Hong and a well placed header by Daniel Steffert, we went 2 - 1 up with just minutes to play.  We were able to see out the match and go two points clear at the top of the table.

Our focus has now turned to the Super 8 competition held in Napier as we look to redeem ourselves after last year's loss in the final.
