♟️ Power Chess National Results, Wellington, Labour Day Weekend, 2024
Master in Charge of Chess, Mr Graham Nolan, reports on our team's latest title wins.
This past weekend the HBHS chess teams entered four National tournaments. Sadly due to ill health, I was not able to accompany the team, but two of our parents, Stephen Coombe, and our old friend, Shane Singh, kindly volunteered to accompany the boys.
Probably the most important of the four tournaments was the team event in Wellington, which we managed to win, with Jeremy scoring 8 out of 9 and earning the Junior Master title. On Sunday the boys played an individual tournament where they could also be drawn to play against each other. Nathan Sun managed to win with 8 out of 9.
Power chess simultaneously ran an online tournament for the students who did not make the top team, or could not get to Wellington to play over-the-board and our boys did very well to come third. In the individual equivalent, Year 9 Ryan Zhou won with 8 out of 9 and also earned the Junior Master Title.
So there were four National titles on offer and we managed to win 3 of them. Our team of Jeremy Coombe, Ishaan Singh, Nathan Sun, Daniel Loy, and Hugh Masters deserve our hearty congratulations as does our online team of Ryan Zhou, Tatva Patel, Aarya Vivekanandan, Shawn Jeng, and Obaidullah Zaman.
Congratulations to all our Chess players.
