🏴 Argyle men put on a dominant performance to beat the Day Boys 42-19 in the William MacErlich Memorial game 🏉🏆
Led by the inaugural winner of the Keaton Reti Memorial MVP, Alex Pitts-Brown, the Hostel boys put on a clinic against the Day boys.
We were blessed to have the MacErlich and the Reti whānau as our honoured guests for the day. This year's game was in memory and honour of not only Will but also Keaton. If you were in the dining room before the game and listened to the heartfelt messages from Mr Kuggeleijn and Mr Moorby you couldn’t help but be inspired and moved by their words.
The scene was set and the boys were inspired to put on a performance that was worthy of the occasion. The pitch was in mint condition and it was such a stellar day that half the Hostel boys were warming up with no shirts on. This had nothing to do with the Manager and backs coach Harry Parker not setting the flash Argyle kit out in time.
The fathers shook hands with all the boys in a very dignified manner at half way before the two teams laid down the challenge to each other. Unfortunately the Day boys couldn't back up the pre-match energy with a performance on the field and a brutal onslaught ensued from the Hostel boys, with some heavy ball-carrying and slick work out wide, the points were piled on.
Playing into the wind, Argyle attacked from everywhere. Not afraid to play it off their line they kept the ball alive and punished the day boys. Some innovative plays and tap moves broke the defence and the Argyle boys were up 28-0 at half-time.
The pressure continued in the second half and the Day boys were lucky enough to get a couple of soft consolation points at the end to make it look closer than it actually was. Final score, 42-19 to the Hostel.
We were very happy there were no serious injuries to any of the footballers, hockey players, swimmers and rowers, and we did not have to call the ambulance like last year!
All the Year 13s finished the game on the field and will cherish this memory for a long time.
The day finished with an aftermatch in the Hostel where a meal was shared and we were able to hear from the two fathers in what was a very stirring experience. William and Keaton were both remarkable young men and were loved by their friends and whānau. It was great that they could be remembered and honoured in such a great way today.
