Service Committee 2021
WHAT A YEAR!!!
Even with the disruptions to our last few service events this year, the HBHS Service Committee has again excelled, making the year our own while also keeping our focus at the fore - helping our school and the wider communities.
Service is such an integral part of this school. Where all boys are encouraged to take part and have all done so aptly. This fundamental foundation of HBHS signified through the crest has been able to help the lives of people in sub-Saharan Africa but also back home in New Zealand and the local area of Hamilton.
This year the Service Committee saved in principle 245 lives and raised well over $35,000 that will continue to have a lasting impact on the recipient charitable organisations but also on the boys who took part.
Our year started off with our bi-annual Blood Drive whilst, unfortunately, our second drive was canceled due to COVID-19. However, even though we only had one event where 81 boys willfully rolled up their sleeves to either help others or just get the free biscuits we were able to potentially improve the lives of up to 254 people around the Waikato. It was amazing to see so many boys keenly raise their hands for one of the service events that is not the easiest. A mention must go to Parth for the work that he put in to maximise engagement but also make the event run so smoothly. What followed was the Service Committee's commitment to the global cause of the 40 Hour Famine. This year was another great result from the hard work of Mrs Stoner, Ethan, Levi, and Keegan who put in a large amount of effort to advertise and keep the boys on track. It was awesome to see that we overtook last years value and surpass our goal of $4000 raising a great total of $4500 dollars.
Our flagship event - the HBHS Shave for a Cure - again went without a hitch. Working with Leukaemia New Zealand and Vardra Hairdressing who volunteered to shave the heads made the event seamless and extremely successful. This year we were down on participants where only 2 teachers shaved with 40 students. Even with this smaller group of participants, we were able to pass our goal of $22,000 where we were able to raise just over $25,000. A new record in the running of the event and fourth highest in the country. This was all donated to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand who support the families and whānau of patients as well as help fund research into new and improved treatment methods with one day the hope of finding a cure. We would like to thank all our participants as well as all the generous parents and caregivers who provided support all the way. We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you to Leneshen and Uvindu and Jamie for all the work that they did to make the event the success it was. The impact that everyone has had was also felt by the CEO of Leukaemia New Zealand who sent in this statement. "Because of the support from Hamilton Boys' High School - fund-raising will help find kinder, more effective cancer treatments that will save lives. You’re also helping struggling patients and families with the practical and emotional help they need to get through cancer,"
Peter Fergusson, CEO of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand would like to extend a special thank you to HBHS.
Our final major project through out the year was the HBHS Service Award scheme, diligently recorded by Jamie and Levi. This jobs seems quite simple but is actually the hardest and most stressful of all our responsibilities. This year we handed out over 110 service badges to the boys. This was an awesome result and congratulations to all award recipients. Another congratulations must go to the THE MIGHTY ARGYLE for again taking out the HBHS service competition for 2021. Argyle House had a comfortable lead through out the year maintaining the top spot right to the end.
This year I believe that the HBHS Service Committee has set a precedent where hard work does pay off and we ALL as a school community can achieve actual change in our communities. It was a pleasure to be the Head of this Committee and seeing my Committee grow, but also be so committed to their projects. Good luck to the Service Committee for 2022.
Thank you
Thomas Hayward
