🏴 Argyle House finishes second in both the HBHS Singing and Haka Competitions preceded by two Matthew Allen Cup events 🥈

Murray McKenzie —

House Singing and Haka were held in Gymnasium 1 Period 3 Wednesday 25th September, in front of the whole school. Matthew Allen Cup Haka and Singing competitions were held on Monday 23rd September, in the HBHS Hall.

Leading up to these two major HBHS House events, both worth double points - 12, Matua Stefan West (Argyle Master) provided the required instruction, to ensure our boys were thoroughly prepared for this annual event over tree practice evenings and during junior prep sessions.

The boys have practiced their Haka stance, technique, pukana, pronunciation and timing on multiple occasions over the past few weeks, with senior leaders and kapa haka students working with Matua West, culminating in a final performance practice in Gym 1 on Tuesday evening, 24th September.

The Argyle House Haka was led by Year 13 boarder, Dallas Rata-Makene, who was awarded best House Haka Leader by the three judges. Argyle House placed second overall in the House Haka competition, giving us 10 points.

The Hostel had another full Haka practice on Monday evening 23rd September in the school Hall. This was followed by the boys dividing into their two Hostel Houses, Bennett and Sutherland, to perform the Haka as part of the Matthew Allen Cup intra-Hostel competition. Bennett House won the Haka event.

In House Singing, Argyle House drew 'I Vow To Thee My Country' to sing in front of the school. A special thanks to the HBHS Singing teacher, Mr Dwight Ashton, for giving up his Monday evening, 23rd September, to provide tuition and instruction in the school hall.

Following on from Mr Ashton's guidance, the Matthew Allen Cup Singing took place. Sutherland House won the Singing event.

Argyle House placed second overall in the House Singing competition, giving us 10 points. A big thank you must also go to Year 13 boarder, Henry Seavill, for volunteering to be our conductor on the day.

The 2024 House Competition has two events left - House Service, that concludes this Friday 27th September, and House Basketball that concludes in Term 4.

Argyle House is now in second place overall, only two points behind Steel House.
