The 2022 HBHS Triathlon and Duathlon season was a successful season in a number of ways for all those involved. At the 2022 New Zealand Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships, held in New Plymouth in late March, we had one individual athlete and two three-man teams compete. This was a very successful event, as HBHS dominated the Under 19 teams category taking both first and second place. The winning team consisted of swimmer Dominic Fawkner, cyclist Robin Kos and runner Joseph Morgan. The second placed team consisted of swimmer Quinn Boyle, cyclist Reuben Fraser and runner Mathijs Wetzels. Lochlan Brown raced individually, but due to some bad luck he missed the podium to eventually finish 4th. With these results we took out the prize for top placed boys' school for 2022.
At the 2022 New Zealand Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships in Pukekohe, HBHS had one two-man team and one individual athlete compete. This was again a very successful event for our team. The Under 16 boys team consisting of runner Zac Brownlee and cyclist Dylan McConnell placed second in a tightly competitive teams competition. Individual Johno OโBrien narrowly missed out on a podium finish by 41 seconds after some fast racing on the Pukekohe Race Track.
2022 has proven to be the most successful season in our school's history. With one National title and two runners up titles we did well with a very small number of competitors. With most of our athletes leaving for tertiary studies in 2023, we look forward to seeing the team rebuild with some new junior competitors.
