🏆 HBHS wins Waikato Regional Chess Tournament again

Graham Nolan —

Our team is off to represent the Waikato once more at the National Tournament in October.

On the 6th of August, HBHS entered two teams into the local Secondary Schools Chess Tournament to determine who would represent Waikato in the NZCF National Tournament to be held over the first weekend of the upcoming school holidays. Eight teams from six schools competed in the all-play-all event. Our A team, consisting of Daniel Loy (captain), Lasen Silva, Nathan Sun, and Jeremy Coombe, won the event for the 12th successive year with a full house of 14 match points. Hillcrest was second with 10 points and St John’s finished third. This was a fine performance by our new-look A team. We wish them well as they take on the country’s best in late September.

The HBHS B team of Ishaan Singh, Hugh Masters, Kevin Li, and Daniel Dizon acquitted themselves well against the rival first teams, losing only to our A team and Hillcrest A, to be placed equal third on game points.
