🏉 HBHS 1st XV Wins 2021 Super 8 Title 🏆
After being defeated by Hastings Boys' High School the previous week, our 1st XV travelled down to Hastings to beat them 12-10 in a tense and tight Super 8 final.
On Friday the 13th of August, our entire 1st XV squad packed up the bus and got comfortable for a five-hour journey down to the sunny Hawke's Bay. After being accommodated at the River Bend Camp Grounds, we woke up the next morning to perfect weather conditions. Having been defeated at home by Hastings the previous week, we knew we had to play a near-perfect game to defeat this very strong Hastings side.
The first half score was in favour of Hastings at 0 - 10, but we knew we were still in this fight. Moses McGoon carrying three players over the line to score was the perfect momentum we needed to start the second half. A great conversion from co-captain Taha Kemara meant the score was now 7 - 10. Building on this momentum, we got a penalty, went for the line out, and then set a strong maul which co-captain Sean Ralph scored off. We were now in the lead 12 - 10. The next 30 minutes consisted of massive defence from our boys, and, with 20 seconds to play, winger Lachie McCarthy got an all-important turnover. We went for a scrum and kicked the ball out on full-time making us the 2021 Super 8 Champions.
