Captain of Volleyball, Andy Nguyen, reports on the team's season.
NZSS Nationals:
During the start of Summer Tournament Week, the Senior A Volleyball team travelled down to Palmerston North to compete in the New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Competition. On Monday, our first game was against Wellington High School. They came out firing and took the first set. In the second set we got used to the new court environment and were playing well, going on to win the game in the third set, 2-1. The second game we played would be the Palmerston North B team, with the momentum the team had from the previous game we beat Palmerston, 2-1. We would then go on a roll and win every game against Te Pae Pae o Aotea, 2-0, Middleton Grange, 2-1, Shirley Boys’ High School, 2-1. This would place us first in the pool. Our Round of 16 game was against a Waikato region team, Matamata College, with the winner progressing into the quarter finals. We were playing well, but it was not good enough to beat them, losing 1-2. For the last three games, we played Garin College, Otago Boys’ High School, and finally Shirley Boys', winning all three with 2-1, 2-1 and 2-0 scores respectively. This placed us 9th in Division 3. We would like to thank Year 13 members, Shae Asiata and Andy Nguyen for their efforts and service for the Senior A team in 2024. Your contribution will be missed and we wish you all the best for your future in Volleyball.
WSS Competition:
For the Senior A Volleyball team our season started on the 10th of February with games against Fraser High School and Cambridge High School. We would round off that weekend losing to Fraser, 2-3, and winning against Cambridge, 3-0. In the second round of the competition we played Rototuna and Hillcrest. The team played well and won 3-2 against Rototuna, but lost to Hillcrest, 3-0. In the third week we had to face Te Awamutu and Tokoroa. The team would come out winning both games, 3-0 and 3-1. For the fourth round, we had an easier weekend as Fairfield defaulted and the boys beat Matamata in a convincing 3-0 win. With the final two wins we were guaranteed a spot in the semi-final. The semi-final was going to be against Fraser High School, a grudge match in response to our first week loss. This game ended our way, winning 3-1. In the WSS Final, we played our rivals Hillcrest High School. We were playing well with a strong performance against a top side, but it still wasn’t enough, losing 0-3. This placed us second in the 2024 WSS Senior Volleyball Season. A special mention goes out to Shae Asiata (best middle) and David Nguyen (best libero) for their naming in the Star 7 tournament team.
Alongside our Senior A team, the Senior B team were the winners of Division 2, Senior Gold finished in 3rd place in Division 2, Senior Red in 7th place in Division 2, and Senior Black finished in 6th place in Division 3. Well done to all involved!
