The Waikato Regionals Kapa Haka Festival witnessed an unprecedented and historic moment as Te Maurea Whiritoi, our school's talented Kapa Haka team, emerged as champions, securing the top spot for the first time in the competition's history. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication, talent, and relentless hard work of our students and their dedicated tutors.
The Waikato Regionals Kapa Haka Festival is renowned for its fierce competition and celebration of Māori culture through the medium of song, dance, and traditional performances. Te Maurea Whiritoi displayed a level of dedication and passion that not only captivated the audience but also impressed the judges, who recognised their exceptional talent.
Under the guidance and mentorship of their kaitataki Kereama Southon and Hamilton Girls’ High School student Karma Newton-Kingi, the students invested countless hours in perfecting their performances, paying tribute to their heritage and representing the school with pride. Their regional performance not only highlights the exceptional Kapa Haka skills of these students, but also speaks to their commitment to preserving and sharing the rich cultural traditions of the Waikato region.
