Fly the flag!

Lynette Burroughs —

Fly the flag to represent your country or a group to show your support. During WWII, the Labour Minister of Education, H.G.R. Mason, introduced regulations on honouring the flag in schools.

The Ceremony of Honouring the Flag Regulations came into force in schools during November, 1941. The Ministry of Education required state schools to 'observe the ceremony of honouring the flag' to commemorate several days. Some of these days, such as Waitangi Day and Anzac Day, are still commemorated, while others like Empire Day and Dominion Day are no longer observed.

During the 1980s, regulations relating to school ceremonies became voluntary, however, here at Hamilton Boys’ High School we continue to raise our flag in recognition of significant events, people and as a daily observance.

From the Head Prefect's foreword in the Hamiltonian, December 1958...

"The school was again chosen as the neatest and most attractive in Hamilton, a tribute to the vision of our previous headmaster, Mr Tait. The erection of a new flagpole and the construction of the long-awaited brick entrances have added to the general appearance of the school".
