๐Ÿ’ HBHS Inline Hockey team win New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship ๐Ÿ† ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

Daniel Middleton —

Congratulations to our latest National title winners!

From Friday the 12th to Sunday the 14th of May, the annual NZSSC Inline Hockey Tournament was held at the Hamilton Devilsโ€™s rink at Eastlink Sports Arena. Going into the tournament, we were fired up after finishing a close second last year. We started off well in pool play, winning our first three games 13-1, 16-0, and 11-1. For our final pool game we played New Plymouth Boys' High School which we knew would be our greatest competition. Unfortunately after a tough game, we ended up losing 2-4.

This left us second in the round-robin, which put us straight through to the gold and silver final against New Plymouth again. Even though we had just lost to this team in round robin, going into the final we were confident we had the ability to win. This final would turn out to be one of the most brutal games of school inline hockey in New Zealand's history. New Plymouth came out hard, putting a lot of physical pressure on to gain an early lead. From there things were looking down, as we trailed the whole game and came into the last 10 minutes down 3-1. However, we managed to up the intensity, with strong defence, to hold out some penalties. Then, two great goals from Nico Bolli and Felix Lu drew us level. Then, with 36 seconds left on the clock, what turned out to be the game-winning goal from Shakayden Pang, put us in the lead. The tournament for us thus turned out to be a resounding success. We reclaimed the Cup which we havenโ€™t held since 2018, and I was awarded Tournament MVP. None of this would be possible without the hard work from all the boys and the organisation of Mrs Wallace. The team was: Benoit Keast, David Nguyen, Shakayden Pang, Fuyi Li, Leo Blackler, Nico Bolli, Jack Ericksen, Felix Lu, Sinan Lu, Odin Roberts, Ethan Sale, Matthew Tangney, and Daniel Middleton (Captain).
