Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship

The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship is one of the University of Waikato's top scholarships.  During their undergraduate degree, recipients receive up to $10,000 per year and are also offered a tailored leadership and personal development programme.  Recipients of this award excel in either a sport or creative/performing art, have high academic achievement and exhibit strong leadership qualities or potential.

Te Paewai o te Rangi:  The University of Waikato Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Te Paewai o te Rangi:  The University of Waikato Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement contributes to the University's vision of achieving excellence, distinctiveness and international connectedness.  

'Te Paewai o te Rangi' can be translated to mean 'the water horizon'.  It is the place where the ocean meets the sky, and where the sun sets and rises every day.  This is the transition point where Tāne travelled on his quest to ascend into the heavens and to suspend the stars in the sky.

Metaphorically, it describes the beginning of the person's journey to achieve excellence.  It is an unending pursuit to reach the pinnacle of your desires which in the case of this Scholarship is education and knowledge.

The Scholarship provides up to $25,000 in the first three years of the student's undergraduate studies.  Only 40% of applicants were awarded the scholarship, including:

Pacific Excellence Scholarship

The Pacific Excellence Scholarship is designed to recognise and foster the achievements of our Pacific students.  The Scholarship is awarded to Pacific students who have excellent achievement and connection to the Pacific community, providing up to $10,000 towards study.

The University received 81 applications from students around the country with just under half gaining the award, including:

Te Ara Whānui Scholarship

Te Ara Whānui Scholarship recognises the importance the University of Waikato assigns to fostering, developing, and protecting Māori excellence, and kapa haka, kaupapa Māori, tikanga, reo, and/or mātauranga Māori.  

Te Ara Whānui can be translated to mean the broad pathway, and is taken from the saying, Te Ara Whānui a Tāne.  This is the pathway Tāne climbed into the heavens to seek knowledge, which he then returned to earth as a treasure for all people.

Therefore, it is fitting that this scholarship provides a platform for Māori students to strive for excellence at the University of Waikato and to awaken and widen their Māori knowledge.

Recipients receive up to $10,000 towards their studies.  This year, the University received 112 applications from students around the country with only 31 offers made, including:

The 'Ko Te Tangata' Scholarship

The 'Ko Te Tangata', or 'For the People', School Leaver Scholarship recognises the University's strong connection and commitment to schools and communities within Aotearoa New Zealand.  

Recipients of the scholarship will be awarded to students who show strong academic readiness and strong community spirit and will receive $5000 towards study, with up to 100 applications receiving an additional $1000 in cash.

The University received 913 applications and around 45% were successful, including:

Jamie Barker, Timothy Evans, Nicholas Geer, Leneshen Govender, Joshua Henderson, Mathew Jacob, Parthiv Kanji, Suprabal Khatry, Matthew Kim, Matthew Lander, Lemuel Le Hane, Brad Lelieveld, Thomas Marchant, Koby Niwa, Ethan O'Donoghue, Joseph Ollington, Lee Panui, Joshua Randall, Oliver Shanks, and Dylan Wilson.

University of Waikato Professional Athletes Dual-Career Scholarship

The University of Waikato Professional Athletes Dual-Career Scholarship was established to support professional and semi-professional athletes to undertake academic studies and help establish dual-careers for life beyond, and alongside, their professional sporting pursuits.  

The Scholarship provides financial support of up to $7000.

Gabe Robinson was the only school leaver offered the scholarship this year.

Brian Smith Memorial Entrance Scholarship

The Brian Smith Memorial Entrance Scholarship was established to support academically excellent accounting students with strong character and achievements both in school and the wider community.

The Scholarship provides financial support of $1000.  This year the University received 122 applications with only 20 awards being made, including:
