🧗♂️ Rock Climbing 2023
Rock Climbing, as a sport at HBHS, continues to have a strong core of committed and competent climbers. There is a good spread of juniors and seniors which bodes well for the future years of climbing strength at the school.
This year our climbers again were the overall competition champions, the top Hamilton city team and won the top All Boys Team in the Waikato.
Waikato Secondary Schools Competition:
Ethan Carmichael was first senior overall with first in Bouldering, second for Speed and Top ropes. Sam Basel came first in Top ropes and second equal for Bouldering with Max Williams. Max had an impressive Speed climb breaking the speed record with a time under 3.4 seconds.
For our juniors, Connor Carmichael came first for Top ropes and Bouldering.
National Secondary Schools Competition:
A team of our top six climbers, Max Williams, Ethan Carmichael, Sam Basel, and Levon Ladewig (seniors), with Ethan Carmichael and Malachi Johnston (juniors), went to the NZSS Rock Climbing Nationals in Tauranga during Winter Tournament week in August.
Despite not make it to the final in the Top rope and Bouldering events, Ethan Carmichael managed to compete in the finals for the Speed climbing.
Looking ahead to 2024 we are wanting to incorporate some real rock climbing on some of the surrounding crags.
Well done to all the climbers for continually pushing yourselves to improve your climbing.
