HBHS Squash team finishes fifth in New Zealand

Jess Weller —

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Nationals were held from the 6th to the 8th of August, at Auckland's North Shore Squash Club. The HBHS team of Angus Henry, Fergus Hill, Adam Oram, Liam Clark, Kyro Stevens and Finn Parkes were seeded 6th and managed to finish 5th.
The boys played 28th seeds Green Bay High (won 5-0), 11th seeds Christchurch Boys' (won 3-1), 3rd seeds Marlborough Boys (lost 3-2), 7th seeds Westlake Boys' (won 4-1), then played Burnside High in the 5th and 6th place play-off (won 4-1). Full credit to the boys for this result after some very tough games!

Our team player of the tournament was Adam Oram for playing excellent squash and being dependable on and off the court.

A special mention to our Number 2 player, Year 10 student Fergus Hill who was named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior Men's team as their Number 5 player. This is a huge achievement and very well deserved. Fergus headed to Sydney, Australia, in Week 6 to compete in the Trans-Tasman Squash competition that will be hosted by the combined high schools of New South Wales.

A massive thanks to Mr Devitt for all his support with organising the weekend, to Miss Weller and Ms Williams for supporting the boys as coach and manager, and to the Hill and Hotham families for spending the weekend with us.

Next year we are excited to be heading off to Wellington for this tournament. We are always looking to get more boys involved in squash so we can grow it at HBHS. If your son is interested in having a go, squash is a great game to learn and play. It is very good for fitness, strategy, agility and is complementary to other sports which require a high cardio output. We have training sessions at Lugton Park on Thursday afternoons from 2:30pm to 4pm, and all boys are welcome.
