NZSS Squash Tournament Report 🥈
Over the weekend of the 1st to the 4th of August, our elite squash team competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships.
The last time HBHS made the final of this tournament was way back in 1998, so these boys made history in achieving such a feat!
We couldn't be prouder of our boys for their dedication, sportsmanship and conduct on and off the court.
The full results of the weekend were:
Round 1 vs Te Paepae o Aotea from Hawera (Seed 31) won 5-0
Round 2 vs New Plymouth Boys' High School (Seed 15) won 5-0
Round 3 vs Lynfield College from West Auckland (seed 10) won 4-1
Semi Final vs Auckland Grammar (seed 3) won 3 - 2
Final vs Tauranga Boys (seed 1) lost 3-2
The boys put everything on the line and came away with the silver medal - going down 3-2 to Tauranga Boys in a contest that could have gone either way! We couldn't be prouder! HBHS were seeded 2nd out of 32 teams from across the country - being second in New Zealand is a pretty amazing achievement.
The team was Riley Noonan, Fergus Hill, Ethan Walkley, Finn Parkes, and Taylor Vette, led by our Captain of Squash, Liam Clark. Congratulations to Riley and Fergus who were selected in the NZSS Senior Boys Squash Team to compete against Australia later this month.
A massive thank you to Miss Weller, Ms Cossey, and to the Clark and Hill families for their support over the weekend. A special thanks to Old Boy and HBHS squash alumni Connor Hill who coached the boys during the weekend and was an asset to the boys overall success.
We sat with Tauranga Boys' before we headed to the airport and had a burger together. Seeing our boys form such great connections with their opponents is 100% what sport is about. We are keeping 4 of the 6 players we took away and still have a bit of depth coming through so we are very excited for next year!
