Our championship winning 1st XV

A celebration of our National Championship winning 1st XV Rugby team

Coach Mr Nigel Hotham reports on the team's stellar season at our Celebration Assembly in the last week of Term 3.

Competing at the Top 4 in Palmerston North was the culmination of an extremely strong Super 8 competition and the Chiefs play-offs which saw the team overcome challenges from St John's College, Tauranga Boys' College, and New Plymouth Boys' High School, with narrow three-point and one-point wins over those final two rivals.

As Chiefs Champions in Top 4 in Palmerston North, we were drawn this year on the Friday against the unbeaten South Island Champions, John McGlashan College.  In a game that allowed us to play the open and free-flowing rugby we enjoy, the team got out to a 27-7 lead at half-time and finished the game in convincing fashion with a score-line of 48-14.

In the other semi-final, our Super 8 rivals Napier Boys' High School outplayed Westlake Boys' High School 40-17.  The final was always going to be a close affair and a classic encounter against a Napier side with a strong forward pack, a punishing lineout drive and a strong kicking game.

Up by 12-5 at half-time, Napier did their best to keep their game simple and tight, but we were well used to tight games, and with a never-say-die attitude this team has had all season, fought back with a try to co-captain Aki Tuivailala with 10 minutes still remaining.

The final play of the game included an attempted Napier backline strike, a tackle and turnover, a dart for the corner, several further attempts at the line held out, until finally first-five Rangiwai Lunjevich threw a long ball to Caelys Putoko to score in the corner with time up on the clock.

Total elation are the only two words to describe the feelings that followed.  A very special National title for a very special and hard-working squad of young players.
