Master Profile - Stefan West

Ko Taupiri tōku maunga, Ko Waikato tōku awa, Ko Tainui tōku waka, Ko Tūrangawaewae tōku marae, Ko Waikato tōku iwi, Ko Ngati Hikairo tōku hapū, Ko Stefan Te Mihaia West tōku ingoa...

I was born and raised in Ngaruawahia in a traditional household where both my parents were and still are teachers. My father has taught at Hamilton Boys’ High School for over 32 years now. Brother Toti was Head Boy in 2006 and soon became a teacher here. At one stage, all three males in our whānau taught at HBHS. Many years ago (2003-2006) we had 3 generations of “Westies” at HBHS, with my grandfather a long-serving science technician.

As an old boy I fondly remember being a Year 9. Watching my PE teacher arrive to class each day full of energy and excitement inspired me and it was my favourite subject at school. I am a sports enthusiast myself and soon realised why my teacher was so happy to be there. He got to teach a variety of sports, have great holidays, drink free hot beverages at lunchtime and go away on memorable school trips while getting paid. What better job could there be?

Studying at Waikato University straight out of high school meant I began my teaching career reasonably young. I have taught at a variety of schools including: Fairfield College, Morrinsville College and Ngaruawahia High School. However, I was determined to come back to Hamilton Boys' High School as a teacher one day. My brother Toti was a Hostel Master nearly 6 years ago. I was fortunate to get a first hand view of what the roles and responsibilities looked like as a master.

My wife Georgia and I have been married for 6 years. We reside on site with our 2 children, Rose (4) and Quentin (2). We feel blessed to be a part of the Argyle whānau and have enjoyed every moment thus far. My kids love running through the hostel chasing each other, hiding and playing silly games with the boys. I have been very impressed with how well the boys are with my ratbags. As you can imagine, they can be a handful sometimes. This example of whakawhanaungatanga means a lot to us as a whanau and we are very grateful.

My role at Hamilton Boys' High School has been unique as I have taught in many different subject areas including: Te Reo Māori, Aotearoa Studies, Physical Education, Sports Studies, Social Studies, Māori Performing Arts and Hospitality. Rugby is also a passion of mine and I am grateful for the opportunities it has presented. These memories and experiences have helped me grow as an individual and I believe it is essential for self improvement. My most memorable coaching experience would be the 2020 Under 15 Condor 7s tournament. We beat Rotorua in extra time during the semi-finals thanks to an Ollie Mathis special. Ten of the members are now current 1st XV players that went on to win the New Zealand title this year. Many of them are also current Hostel boys. I have coached the 2nd XV for the past three years, managed our Ki-O-Rahi side and coached junior rugby 7s.

Living in the Hostel has given me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the Hostel staff, students and their families. I am excited to see our men develop into strong confident individuals that contribute positively to our society. I believe Argyle House is the heart of Hamilton Boys’ High School and it has been an honour working here this year. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
