Lacrosse 2022

Teacher in Charge of Lacrosse, Mrs Meaghan Cooley, reports on the National Tournament and the successes of our Lacrosse players this year at various levels of competition.

As Teacher in Charge of Lacrosse it is my pleasure to report on the results of the National Secondary Schools tournament which was held over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of September at Memorial Park in Cambridge.

In round robin play HBHS defeated Cambridge High School 8-1. They then defeated Westlake Boys’ 9-1 and beat a tough Te Awamutu College side 4-3. The team did experience one loss to an invitational President's team, made up of combined secondary schools. After round robin play HBHS had qualified for the final.

In the final, the team had the opportunity to play Te Awamutu College again after defeating them the day before. In a hard fought game and with a few missed opportunities at goal, HBHS finally went down 2-4 to Te Awamutu, finishing 2nd overall in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Tournament.

Congratulations must go to Scott Cathcart, Ben Cowen, and Mark Seager, Year 13 students who were selected for the tournament team at the National event. Thank you to all of the supporters and whānau who were with the team for the weekend, and to members of the Executive and staff who supported us. I must also thank Mrs Rae and Mrs Bury for their assistance with lacrosse this year.

The final for the Waikato Secondary Schools’ Lacrosse season was held on Sunday the 28th of August, at the Tamahere Recreation Ground. HBHS had two teams (HBHS Red, captained by Scott Cathcart and HBHS Black, captained by Ben Cowen) playing in the Secondary Schools competition to bolster the number of teams. In the final, HBHS Black faced off against a strong Te Awamutu College side in what was a well-fought battle. HBHS Black finally lost to Te Awamutu in a close game. 3-4.

In additional lacrosse news, we congratulate Do-Hun Yoo (Year 10) and Callum Rae (Year 9) on their selection in the Waikato Lacrosse Under 15 Development side. Year 10 student Devon Ormsby has also been selected for the Waikato Lacrosse Under 15 Premier team.

Congratulations must also go to the seven past and present HBHS students who were selected in the New Zealand Under 18 Lacrosse team which went on to play in the Under 18 Australian Championships in Adelaide. Well done, Ashan Barr, John-David (JD) Brown, Scott Cathcart, Ben Cowen, Max Mills, Kyle Parker, and Mark Seager.  Tino pai, HBHS Lacrosse!
