Congratulations to the 2022 recipients of the Graham Robinson Memorial Scholarship

The Graham Robinson Memorial Scholarship Programme has been made possible by a generous donation from members of the wider school community. In accordance with the donor's wishes, the scholarship programme recognises and celebrates outstanding contributions to teaching and learning at HBHS by our teaching staff.

This initiative was first announced at the end of 2021, and our 2022 winners were congratulated at the end-of-year staff function last year. Up to five scholarships, worth $2000 each, will be awarded per year, and recipients will be celebrated on the last day of the school year. The scholarships are intended to fund continued professional development, including (but not limited to), conference attendance, tuition fees, visits to other schools and institutions, and sabbatical costs. The Scholarship selection committee consists of the Executive and is chaired by our Headmaster, Mrs Hassall. Once the recipients have completed their chosen professional development, they will provide a brief written report on how the scholarship has benefitted their continued development as an educator, which will then be shared with the donors.

2022 winners:

Mr Stephen Smith, for outstanding leadership of the HPW Faculty, and a commitment to both teaching excellence and professional development.  Here's how Mr Smith felt about receiving this award...

It was a real honour to be awarded the Graham Robinson Memorial scholarship. The scholarship is a testament to the hard work and dedication that has been put into driving the academic profile of the Physical Education Department and this would not be possible without the support and commitment of the PE Faculty. It is exciting to have the opportunity and financial support to gain the further professional development and continue the positive momentum of Physical Education at Hamilton Boys' High School. It is also an honour to be recognised amongst such talented and driven individuals.

Mr Dwight Ashton, for outstanding pedagogical practice in the teaching of Drama, and visionary leadership in the performing arts.  This is Mr Ashton's response to his recognition...

I am very surprised to receive the Graham Robinson Memorial Scholarship. There are so many great teachers at our school. So many teachers who go above and beyond for the care and betterment of their students. I feel so grateful to be part of the HBHS team. Working alongside these people makes me a better teacher. I am also very humbled because this award is in Graham Robinson's honour. I only worked with Graham for a few years but the example of dedication and self-sacrifice he set for all of us was inspiring. Receiving this scholarship has spurred me to seek out more professional development opportunities in the the performing arts and leadership. Thank you to Mrs Hassall and the board of trustees for your acknowledgement, support and encouragement.

Ms Melissa Young, for commitment to excellence in the teaching of Chemistry, and support of the school's most academically able students.  Ms Young had this to say about her award...

There are so many hard-working dedicated teachers at HBHS so I was surprised and very grateful to receive this award.
Teaching Chemistry is amazing - we watch our students acquire practical and academic skills which are so relevant to our world and useful for their future careers. The challenge is the amount of "stuff" students have to learn, particularly if they are undertaking Cambridge, NCEA and Scholarship examinations. I intend to use this award to increase efficiency in our teaching and learning programme. I will network with teachers in other schools and investigate resources we could use to make the teaching and learning less overwhelming for all involved.

Ms Fozia Razak, for commitment to excellence in the teaching of Economics, and outstanding student success in the New Zealand Scholarship examination.  This was her reaction to this acknowledgement...

Being recognised as a recipient for this award came as a pleasant surprise to me. While I was very happy to receive this award, I genuinely acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the HBHS staff team, who help towards the holistic 'crafting' of the young men in our professional care. It has always been amazing to share my teaching experiences with so many dedicated and hard-working teachers, while learning from them at the same time. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mrs Hassall and the Executive management for their encouragement and support. Teaching Economics is my passion and it has been pleasing to note that many of my Scholarship students displayed the same passion for learning, when in class. I plan to use this award in collaborating with Scholarship teachers from other schools and observing how they run the Economics Scholarship programme. I would also like to use this award to secure extra resources for my students. I wish all students and staff at HBHS a prosperous year ahead.

Congratulations once again to our wonderful worthy recipients.
