Multicultural Manaaki Swimming Programme 2023

While school is only just getting started, the Multicultural Manaaki Centre here at HBHS is already in full swing.

For the past few weeks we have seen the continuation of the extremely successful MMC swimming lessons that occur on Tuesdays at lunch. Our Mentee and Mentor students are encouraged to dive in and develop their swimming skills in a fun, relaxing way. From learning the basics of staying afloat to the different styles and strokes, the varying skills of our mentee students are all catered for by the capable hands of our mentors and leaders.

The Multicultural Manaaki Centre commenced 2023 with Tuesday lunchtime swimming lessons led by our mentors, who teach their mentees how to swim. This event started with Ms Shah thinking and talking to the refugee students about their swimming abilities, she wanted the students to be safe in and around the water, and the swimming sessions were started.

All of our mentors who are confident swimmers will give up their Tuesday lunch to come to the pool, and help their mentees be more confident at swimming. They will meet up at the HBHS pool and pair up with each other, and support our members of the MMC to become confident swimmers. Mentors will teach their mentees the essential skills needed to be in the water, this will make them more confident and give them more options for sports and make them feel safer living in New Zealand.

We thank all of the mentors and mentees for giving up their time to attend this event. We also thank all of the teachers involved in organising this event.
