Tennis 2023

In glorious summer sunshine on Friday the 10th of February, twelve of the school's top tennis players competed in our annual school tennis championship.

After some close fought matches, Jack McGregor and brother Flynn McGregor confirmed themselves as our two top ranked senior players, with Jack McGregor winning the final in a hotly contested match to be crowned the Senior Champion.

In the Junior section, Year 9 student Jordan Causer showed his talents by coming through his round robin matches undefeated to become the Junior Champion.

Congratulations to all the players for their fantastic display of skills, sportsmanship and stamina. This event marked the start of a busy schedule of exchanges, tournaments and our penultimate NZSS Tennis Nationals in March.

Quadrangular Tennis Tournament:

The 44th Annual Tennis Quadrangular was hosted at the Waikato Tennis Centre early in March. HBHS won the event for the first time in 44 years! The winning team consisted of Jack McGregor, Flynn McGregor, Ben Stephens, Thando Thebe, and Oliver Taylor.

Congratulations to all of these boys on their efforts and to Teacher in Charge Mr Simon Devitt for all of his work in supporting what is proving to be a very strong HBHS Tennis team.

NZSS Tennis Cup, Hamilton, Monday 27th to Thursday 31st March:

HBHS sent two teams to contest the Tennis Cup, and HBHS 1 swept all before them, beating Sacred Heart, 3-0, and Francis Douglas Memorial College, 2-1, to set up an all-HBHS semi-final against HBHS 2. HBHS 2 had a similar run, beating Feilding Agricultural School, 3-0, Rathkeale College, 3-0, and AGC Parnell, 2-1. It would be HBHS 1 who would prevail in the semi-final, and in an agonisingly close final against New Plymouth Boys' High School, they lost in a tie-break to finish in second place overall. HBHS 2 would finish behind them in third, after winning their bronze medal playoff.
