Angus Henry and Snehith Devireddy celebrate their Northern Districts win by Lucy Henry

Summer Sporting Success Stories

Director of Sport, Mr Murray McKenzie, fills us in on some of our achievements during the Christmas school holidays.

CRICKET

Our 1st XI and 2nd XI Cricket teams re-commenced their season in their respective Hamilton competitions in early January, with the 1st XI placing 3rd in the 50 over and Twenty/20 competitions in the Men’s Premier Grade. The 2nd XI followed suit with the same results while playing in the Hamilton Senior A division, with Reid Bishop the standout performer scoring 108 against Star. The 2-day competition for the 1st XI is now underway.

Thanks to Mr Kuggeleijn and parent Mr Sulzberger for their continued dedication and commitment to coaching our 1st XI and 2nd XI teams throughout the summer months.

Congratulations to Snehith Devireddy and Angus Henry for gaining selection in the Northern Districts Under 17 Cricket team that won their national tournament in Lincoln Christchurch, going through the tournament undefeated. Snehith was awarded Player of the Tournament scoring 90 runs and taking 5 wickets against Canterbury, and scoring 82 against Wellington. Angus Henry also scored 90 runs against Canterbury.

ATHLETICS

The NZSS Athletics Championships were held in Inglewood, Taranaki, with a small contingent of 5 athletes from HBHS competing. Our best results were with Dian Jacobs who placed 7th in the Senior boys' javelin and Jesse Humberstone-Kara placing 8th in the Junior boys’ discus.

Covid hit our athletics team hard with Mathijs Wetzels testing positive two days before the competition and our best medal hope, Joseph Morgan, as defending NZSS Senior 800m and 1500m champion, testing positive the day before competing.

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Cooley for taking the team and managing them during their campaign.

CONDOR INVITATIONAL SEVENS

The day after HBHS had won the NZSS Open Condor Sevens, a NZSS Under 17 Invitational Condor Sevens tournament took place over 2 days at the same venue. HBHS won 2 of their 3 pool games, and went on to win their quarter-final and then their semi-final against Massey HS 17-7, putting them up against Kelston BHS in the final, losing in a nailbiter, 24-22, to finish 2nd in NZ.

Thanks to Mr Te Ruki-Chambers and Mr Miller for coaching and taking our team away to this inaugural tournament.

TOUCH

A team of 16 players travelled to Rotorua to compete in the NZSS Touch Nationals, a tournament HBHS has a proud record in. The 2022 team included three Year 9s and two Year 10s, due to a clash with the Rugby 1st XV trip to Thailand. Despite such a young team, they won 6 of their 8 pool and crossover games and drew one game, taking great satisfaction in beating arch rivals Rotorua BHS 12-3.

Unfortunately, HBHS did not go through to the top 4, missing the semi-finals on countback by a solitary try.

They won both their 5th-8th playoff games, defeating Westlake BHS 7-5 to finish 5th in NZ. A wonderful achievement for such a young and inexperienced team.

Thanks to Matua Graham and Old Boys, Riley O’Donnell as Assistant Coach and Bailey Waudby as team manager, for taking the team away for their 3-day tournament.
