2023 Gold Coast Futsal International Cup

Connor Cloete reports on the HBHS Futsal contingent which competed in this tournament.

Futsal is a sport that is continuing to grow, not only in HBHS, but across the Waikato and New Zealand. Many of our students represent both the school and clubs across the Waikato. At the start of 2022, Kyle Wisnewski, a former HBHS student, who is the Director of Four Zero Futsal, proposed a tour to the Gold Coast to participate in the Gold Coast Futsal International Cup with teams from across Australasia. After trials and training camps, teams were selected across five age groups.

On 17 January 2023, nine Four Zero Academy Futsal teams departed for Brisbane to participate in a week long International Futsal Tournament on the Gold Coast. HBHS was well represented across all age groups with 20 current HBHS students and 12 alumni participating in the tournament.

Our young Under 13 boys’ side played their hearts out in a very strong Under 13 competition. They showed moments of brilliance and were unlucky at times. The Under 14 team battled through the group stage, narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-final. The Under 15 boys lost in the quarter finals against the eventual runners up. A special mention to Josh Barrymore-Uden, the top goal scorer in the Under 15 boys’ competition. The Under 19 team, consisting of current HBHS students George Dixon, Connor Cloete, and Old Boy Corbin Fell earned a spot in the quarter finals. They led the quarter final 3-1 before eventually going down in a penalty shootout 5-4. The men’s team, consisting of old boys Kyle Wisnewski, Cooper Wink, Caeden Rogers, Keenan Howard, Max Erickson, Tyler Erickson, Daniel Steffert, and Casey Sharplin lost 1-0 against the Queensland F league champions side, Sunshine Coast.

With so many talented futsal players, the future of Futsal at HBHS is looking very bright.
