WSS and NZSS Lacrosse

Teacher in Charge of Lacrosse at HBHS, Mrs Meaghan Cooley, reports on our team and how they fared.

The final for the Waikato Secondary Schools’ Lacrosse season was held on Sunday the 28th of August, at the Tamahere Recreation Ground. HBHS had two teams (HBHS Red, captained by Scott Cathcart and HBHS Black, captained by Ben Cowen) playing in the Secondary Schools competition to bolster the number of teams. In the final, HBHS Black faced off against a strong Te Awamutu College side in what was a well-fought battle. HBHS Black finally lost to Te Awamutu in a close game, 3-4.

However, in the National Secondary Schools tournament held over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of September at Memorial Park in Cambridge, the HBHS teams were able to combine entering one strong and competitive line up. Over the two day tournament, the team would have the opportunity to play Te Awamutu College again, defeating them 4-3 in round robin play. They also played against Cambridge High School defeating them 8-1, Westlake Boys’ defeating them 9-1 and losing to a President's combined team from Rosmini College 3-4. After round robin play the team had qualified for the final.

The final was to be played against our nemesis Te Awamutu College. In a hard fought game and with a few missed opportunities at goal, HBHS finally went down 2-4 to Te Awamutu, finishing second overall in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Tournament.

Congratulations must go to Ben Cowen, Scott Cathcart, and Mark Seager, Year 13 students who made it into the Tournament team at the National event. Thank you to all families and supporters who were with the team for the weekend.

Lacrosse Scholarship:

Hamilton Boys’ High School would also like to acknowledge our team coach this year, Old Boy Kyle Parker, who has recently moved to the U.S. to take up a Lacrosse Scholarship at Northland College, Ashland Wisconsin, a NCAA D3 School. We wish Kyle well in his pursuits in lacrosse. Kyle is our first lacrosse scholarship recipient, and hopefully not our last!
