Newsletter Week 8, Term 3

Claudine Campbell —

Malo e lelei, we hope you enjoyed celebrating Tongan Language Week. We have 19 children at our school that are of Tongan descent. We have enjoyed learning some new language and dressing up today. Ma'u ha 'aho lelei (Have a nice day).

Wetlands Trip: As part of our school-wide unit focusing on endangered species and extinction, classes all traveled by bus to Mr Russell Langdon's Wetlands in Lagmhor.  The children explored the area and identified some birds and fish.  Mr Langdon showed the children some frozen predator's that he had trapped such as stoats, ferrets and possums.  We are grateful to Mr Langdon for his hospitality, time and expertise over the three days this week.  Also special thanks to Ange, Edith and Val that educated us. We are also very grateful for all the adult helpers that made this possible and supported the children in their learning.

Kai 4 Kids Taste Testing: Mrs Jo Taylor took a group of our children to the Kai for Kids headquarters to taste test some new lunch options for Term 4.  The children did a great job and gave some helpful feedback.  We really appreciate that Kai 4 Kids are constantly adapting their food to best suit the children.

Election Polling site: Hampstead School Hall will be a polling site for the General Election on Saturday 14 October.  If you are interested in being an election officer, you can express your interest before 30 September by following this link: https://work.elections.nz/work-at-general-elections

Healthy Active Learning Surveys: Thank you everyone that completed these surveys.  This gives a great picture of what is in working well in Health and Physical Education at our school and what we could enhance.  Thanks to Anna Holland at Sport Canterbury for organising this and providing a $50 New World voucher as a spot prize.  The lucky winner is Hazel of Rm 5's Mum Lauren.  Thanks so much Lauren, Miss Wise will give your the voucher.

Rugby League Club Ashburton: There is a Junior Competition, starting on the 30th of September and running for 6 weeks – this is open to all kids in Mid & South Canterbury.  The grades are under 7s, 9s, 11s and 13s.  It is a great way for kids to get involved with a new sport and learn new skills. Do you know anyone turning 5? To help with our planning and staffing, we'd love to know if any children living within our enrolment zone are turning 5 in the next year. If they haven't already pre-enrolled, please encourage them to get in touch. Here is a link to our enrolment zone: https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/find-school/school/profile?school=3367

Students of the Week: Last week we celebrated Trace of Rm 9. Trace is always very polite, helpful, kind and thoughtful. He is always encouraging and checking in with his classmates, making sure they are okay and brightening up everyone's day. Trace includes all his peers and will never let anyone feel excluded. He comes to class with a positive attitude and gets on with his learning without needing to be asked. He tries his best in everything he attempts. Trace always remains positive and enjoys offering his help to those when they need it. He is a great role model for Room 9 and the Hampstead School. Keep up the amazing work Trace. This week we acknowledged Lily of Rm 2. Lily is a ray of sunshine in Room 2. She is kind, encouraging and supportive to others in her class and beyond. She is always willing to help others and motivate them to make good choices. Lily can be relied upon to follow expectations, work hard and always give things a try. Her smile radiates positive energy and never fails to make others smile back! Lily is a fantastic role model we are lucky to have in Room 2.
