Newsletter Week 2, Term 4

Claudine Campbell —

Kia ora Hampstead whanau. It has been a really busy two weeks back with lots of fun events and activities. Thanks everyone for a fantastic Athletics Day and special thanks to Kai for Kids for putting on such an amazing shared kai for everyone to enjoy.

Athletics: The sun came out for us on our postponement date of 18 October.  It was a really positive day and we all enjoyed a lovely picnic with food kindly provided by Kai for Kids. Mrs Wise will let the Year 5-6 children that have qualified for the County Athletics on 3 November know shortly.  The event organisers have decided to make this event for Year 5-8 only and therefore there will be no Year 3 and 4 entries for sprints or high jump and long jump.

Book Competition: Miss Peterson ran a book character competition in the library.  Congratulations to following children who received prizes in the three age categories:

1st Hazel Rm 5, 2nd Oriro Rm 17, 3rd Elizah Rm 17, Highly Commended Kora-Lee Rm 6
1st Lexi Rm 13. 2nd Teah-Paige Rm 11, 3rd Ella Rm 12, Highly Commended Jaxon Rm 14
1st Krystal Rm 9, 2nd Louis Rm 7, 3rd Jasmine Rm 11, Highly Commended Chini Rm 10

Nationwide Shakeout: Our school took part in the Nationwide Shakeout on Thursday 19 October at 9.30am.  Everyone practiced the earthquake procedure: Drop, Cover, Hold and then evacuate once the shaking stops.

Young Vinnies: We are fortunate to have Laura Banks from St Vincent de Paul come and work with a group of ten Year 6's on a Tuesday afternoon.  We haven't had an opportunity to run this group since before Covid.  This group offers service in the community and they are currently working on ideas to support our local foodbank in Ashburton.

Pasifika Strengths & Cultural Identity: Mana Ake offered a wonderful opportunity for a group of ten of our Pasifika learners to take part in a programme similar to "Ko Wai Au" in our hall on Tuesday mornings.  We have had 2 out of the 6 sessions and it has been really popular with the children.

Gumboot Friday: On Friday 3 November, we are supporting a great cause to raise money for additional counselling in schools, which is much needed for so many of our tamariki.  We are also supporting two our board members Dayle and Regan, who are growing and then shaving their mullets in an attempt to raise $10, 000.  Children can wear mufti and gumboots and we will be collecting donations to help raise the target and donations can be made here:

Learning outside the Classroom: As part of our "Paddock to Plate" unit this term, the children have been on some great learning expeditions to local producers such as Talleys, Midlands Honey, The Dirty Fork and local farms.  Mrs Eaton is working with Kai for Kids and Mitre 10 to install some vegetable gardens for the children to grow and harvest.  We are very thankful for the adult helpers and volunteers that have offered their time and energy to make these trips such a positive learning experience for everyone.

Congratulations Mrs Eaton: Our board of trustees are delighted to announce that Mrs Lois Eaton has been appointed as our Senior Deputy Principal.  Miss Gray was previously in this role and has decided not to return to full time work after being on Maternity Leave this year to look after her wee boy Angus.  Miss Gray will continue to be a relief teacher for us in the future.

Classes for 2024: We are already starting to think about class placements for next year.  Our teaching staff remains the same next year with Mrs Sarah Grieve remaining in Rm 1 permanently.  If there is anything specific we should be aware of in regard to your child's class placement next year, please talk to your child's class teacher about this. If you are not returning to Hampstead School next year (other than Year 6's), please let the office know.

Community Code of Conduct: All our policies including our Community Code of Conduct can be found on www.schooldocs.co.nz  Username: hampsteadschool  Password: welcome

In Term 1 next year, our Community Code of Conduct will come up for review.  This agreement is to keep everyone safe at all school activities. A PDF is attached below.  Please email any suggestions or ideas you have to claudine.c@hampsteadschool.co.nz

Intermediate Uniforms: Year 6 families, please see the poster attached below with details of Ashburton Intermediate School uniform changes.

Hampstead School Whanau group: Our PTA are changing their name - come along on Wednesday 15 November at 3pm to help decide on a name.  Meetings are now held on Wednesday afternoons straight after school in Weeks 1 and 6.  Meet in Rm 17, your children can play.  Afternoon tea is provided and it is an informal group that work to support our school community.

Do you know anyone turning 5? To help with our planning and staffing, we'd love to know if any children living within our enrolment zone are turning 5 in the next year. If they haven't already pre-enrolled, please encourage them to get in touch. Here is a link to our enrolment zone: https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/find-school/school/profile?school=3367

Students of the Week: Last week, we celebrated Chase of Rm 5. Chase is a kind, helpful and cheerful student. Chase has lots of motivation, enthusiasm and energy in everything he does. He has fantastic knowledge and loves to learn. Chase always looks out for those around him and is willing to help out others when needed. He is a great role model and we are very lucky to have him in Room 5. Chase is a star! This week we acknowledged Isla of Rm 8. Isla is a helpful, motivated and responsible member of Room 8. She always greets everyone in the mornings and is friendly to everyone.
