Tuahiwi Marae Visit, Term 1.
In the last week of Term 1 the Kahikitea team and some tamariki from the Matai team visited Tuahiwi Marae. We had an amazing day and learnt lots about the area and people of Tuahiwi.
We gathered at the marae at 9:30 and were welcomed on with a powhiri. It was interesting to listen to the kaikorero speaking from both the tangata whenua and manuhiri sides. We then did the hongi before sharing some kai. Then it was time for us to share our pepeha/mihi. We had been practicing all term but some of us were a bit nervous, however we felt so proud after we had done it. We learnt about the history of Tuahiwi Marae and some of the key people who were involved with establishing the iwi. By lunch time we were starving and ready for some more kai. In the afternoon we looked at the Ngai Tahu creation story and the more commonly known creation story. In groups we acted out one of the stories and even had a special presentation from the adults! Sadly it was nearly time to go. We finished with the poroporoaki and one last waiata before heading back to school. It was an amazing day and we felt so lucky to be able to visit Tuahiwi. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the adults who came and supported us on the day, we couldn't have done it without you.
