Year 5 and 6 OUTDOOR EDUCATION Term 4 2023 #1

Joanna Woods —

Plans are finalised for our Term 4 Outdoor Education Programme. These events are a great opportunity for students to put their Key Competencies in action: seeking challenges, working in teams, communicating clearly, being personally organised. They are also a chance to celebrate and demonstrate the Harewood School Values and E Tu Tangata.

In order to run this programme successfully we will need a lot of help and support from parents for the Sailing and Action Day. It’s all a heap of fun and one of the great memories for Year 5 and 6 students as well as the parents that get involved.

Rug Sale: The funds raised have gone towards subsidising the cost of the Term 4 Outdoor Education programme.

Please return the slip attached to this notice.

  • Sailing at Lake Rua At Greywacke Road, Harewood Monday 4 December

  • Action Day Day Omaka - Monday 27th November, p/p Friday 1st December

Sailing

This is held at Lake Rua off the end of Sawyers Arms Road. The activity is run by KORE Sailing which the school has had a long association with. (https://www.kore.co.nz/kore-for-schools) Students learn how to rig a yacht as a team and then sail it individually under the close supervision of qualified instructors in support motorised boats. All safety equipment is supplied. Students wear their own thermals /wetsuits and swimming gear.

We are askingfor two groups of parent helpers for sailing:

  1. those willing to transport and/or

  2. those willing to help in the water and on shore with the yachts.

This second group of parents need to be prepared to be hands on and up to their knees in water. We advise you to dress in wetsuits or togs or clothing that can get wet. Aqua shoes or old track shoes are also advisable.

Sailing experience not required.

On the day: leave school at 9:10am, returning at approximately 3:00pm.

Action Day

Are you or another adult family member (e.g. grandparent) able to run an activity on the day? This day simply cannot work without the participation of parents/family adults.

We will need adult supervision at each of the activities throughout the day. All activities come with clear instructions and are easy to run, helpers will be supported by the team teachers.

Each Family’s Contribution -The total contribution from whānau will be $23, which covers sailing and Action Day. This has been subsidised by the school and the proceeds from our Term 3 Rug Sale fundraiser. If there are any issues with covering the cost of the Term 4 Outdoor Education programme please see Kate Christie so we can assist and ensure your child participates in this important aspect of our school curriculum.

Please don't hestitate to email or call us if you have any questions or need to chat.

Please complete this form which asks for permission for both sailing and Action Day as well as offers for help and transport.

Thank you for your support
