Keeping Harewood School Beautiful by Pia
We have been very busy in Pia this term, learning all about waste and recycling.
We started with the theme of keeping our school beautiful. With this in mind, we walked around the school looking at areas of the school that could be improved. We noticed lots of leaves everywhere, and also rubbish. This made us think about waste and what happens to waste in our school. When we looked in the recycling bin we realised that not everything in the bin could be recycled. After learning about composting, recycling and what happens at the council recycling centre, we drew a design for a machine that would solve the problem of waste in our school environment.
As a result of this learning the children in Pia have come up with some simple ideas to reduce waste in our school environment. These include:
Reminding children to not put rubbish in their pockets at morning tea, but return it to their lunchboxes
Leave rubbish at home - chips or muesli bars could be taken out of the packet before going in the lunchbox
Name any packets before putting them in the lunchbox. This way the rubbish can be returned to the person who dropped it.
Make a sign for the playground to remind children what to do with rubbish
Make a sign for each class to put on their recycling bins to remind them what waste goes in each bin
Here are some of the other highlights of the term.
