Safety at the School Gate

Harewood school - March 13, 2025

Making sure our children and parents get to school safely is a high priority for us and your help with this is appreciated.

Safety at the School Gate

Harewood School has a Speed Zone which means that the usual 50kph speed limit outside the school is 40 kph before and after school.

For those children who cross Harewood Road at the school gates we provide a before and after school road patrol. This is supervised by trained year 5/6 students and a volunteer parent in the morning and a staff member and trained year 5/6 students in the afternoon.

Please ensure you take care around our school and use the crossing.

All pedestrians must use the small gate and footpath, not the driveway to walk into and out of the school.

Parents of children in year 1 usually come to collect their children from their classroom. Older children who are waiting for parents need to wait inside the school gate for parents to collect them. For safety reasons when the road patrol go off duty all children still waiting to be collected must come and wait outside the office.

If you are going to be late picking your children up please contact the school office so we know you are on your way.

For the safety of the pedestrians using the crossing, please observe the no parking zones outside the school and take extra care and be considerate when parking.

Parking

The car park in the school grounds is a staff car park only. Please do not drive into this area to drop off or pick up your children. The exception to this is those requiring disabled parking or collecting sick children.

The P3 outside our school is ideal for pulling into to drop off your children in the morning or collecting your children who are waiting at the entrance way after school. Please do not leave your car or park for longer than 3 minutes or you are likely to receive a parking infringement notice. We encourage parents to arrive just after 3pm to give your child time to get to the gate.

Bicycles

Year 6 children participate in the Safe Cycling Programme at school.

Bicycles must not be ridden in the school grounds. They should be wheeled down the path and put in the stands behind Whatutoto. Cyclists must wear a safety helmet.

The Harewood Road footpath from the school to Trafford Street is an official cycleway, and because of the heavy traffic on Harewood Road, we encourage all child cyclists to use this,  dismounting and wheeling their cycles across Wooldridge and Stanleys Roads. We also ask that they are considerate to pedestrians sharing this path, particularly in the narrow part near the playcentre, and that they walk their cycles or scooters past our driveway.
