Kiwi Competitions

Joanna Woods —

For the first time this year, we offered Year 5 and 6 children the opportunity to sit the Kiwi Competitions which are administered by the University of Canterbury's Centre for Assessment and Monitoring.

Those children who took up the option of sitting the Kiwi Competitions had the choice of Mathematics, English and Science. The children were able to choose 1 or more subject area to participate in. All the content for these assessments are based on our New Zealand Curriculum and contained a mix of multi-choice and short answer questions. The children sat the tests online.

This year we would like to congratulate the following students for the results they achieved.

Monty: Maths - excellence, Science - merit, English - merit

Aless: English - excellence

Isla: English - Merit, Maths - Merit

Brianna: English - Merit

Tahlia: Maths - Merit

We are proud of all the children that decided to take up the challenge and give these assessments a go. The results are all graded by percentile and are classified as :

  • Distinction - greater than or equal to 99 percentile
  • Excellence - greater than or equal to 90, but less than 99 percentile
  • Merit - greater than or equal to 75, but less than 90
  • Achieved -  greater than or equal to 50, but less than 75
  • Participated - less than 50 percentile.

The 50th percentile is the middle for all the scores calculated for a particular competition subject area and year level. The middle score could differ for each competition depending on the group of children taking part.
