Leafcutter bee house.

Joanna Woods —

Bishopdale New World kindly gave us a bee house, 75 leafcutter cocoons, a  bumble bee box and a huge box of Little Garden seed kits.

At the end of Term 3 we were lucky enough to be presented with everything you need to have leafcutter bees in our garden. We had never heard of these kinds of bees, so we did a little research and discovered that these are solitary bees, they live in small colonies and don't make  a lot of honey. Instead, they collect nectar and pollen and do a great job pollinating our gardens.  We learnt that 1 leafcutter can do the work of 20 honey bees. They are called leafcutters as they cut off pieces of leaf to wrap around their cocoons and protect the baby bees.

These bees are very friendly and rarely sting. We are looking forward to seeing them buzzing around our flowers when they emerge from their home in mid-November.
