One of the things we are continuing to focus on in 2025 is raising our rate of regular student attendance. We will need your help with this.
As a parent or caregiver, you, alongside our school, play a key role in building strong habits of regular school attendance. Why does this matter? As well as being a legal requirement to attend school every day, regular attendance enables rich relationships between our teachers and students. Moreover, the Ministry of Education reports strong correlations between regular student attendance and success at school. Therefore, the Ministry of Education has increased accountabilities for schools and parents/caregivers, leading to a reduction in acceptable reasons for absences
Please let us know if your child is going to be absent and the reason for the absence, or if you intend for your child to be absent for a portion of the school term for valid reasons, like a tangi or medical procedure. Family holidays or taking time off for extracurricular activities (not organised by school) are not catergorised as acceptable reasons for being absent. Please review your Hero app for the attendance code applied to your child's absence.
Knowing if your child is well enough to go to school can be tricky. Health guidance to support you to decide is available here. If you are still unsure, get in touch with us.
It is a shared responsibility to make sure students attend and engage in learning. So from when they first start school through to their time in Kahikatea (Year 5 &6), we strive to design a joyful school climate and engaging approaches to teaching and learning. If you are finding it hard to get your child to school, please talk with us so we can work together. Our school is committed to supporting your child to attend school.
