Throwing clay with Art Enrichment

Fiona Taylor —

An exciting first session for this group learning to use the pottery wheel.

Student learnt to thow terracotta clay on the wheel. They were helped to center the clay before opening it up and creating a bowl. After leaving the clay to dry slightly after a couple of days the bowls were returned to the wheel to have their bases turned. When completely dry they were fired in the kiln and became ceramic. Everyone then looked at a variety of different glazes and chose their favourite. After glazing the bowls were returned to the kiln for their second firing. It is always a surprise to see the changes firing makes to the pottery.

In Art Enrichment, I learnt how to use a pottery wheel. It was my first time throwing clay so I was very nervous and excited at the same time. My mug's bottom was a bit too thick but was solved with a lot of carving and a bit of sand papering. The hardest part of pottery for me was that I kept sticking my fingers into the clay, making the clay wobble. After I took my clay mug off the wheel, I felt accomplished, knowing that I learnt a new skill. For my glaze, I used Galaxy, which first was a muddy, lumpy glaze. I trusted this glaze, hoping it would turn out like a deep terracotta colour. The outcome of the glaze turned out to be a nice blue which separated, making squiggly patterns. Overall, I would definitely use a wheel again and Galaxy is now my favourite glaze.

I found art enrichment really enjoyable. We got to make clay bowls on the wheel. It was a cool experience learning how to use the wheel. First we grabbed a thick clay block and threw it on the wheel. Then we spun it and used a lot of water. It was so messy but fun at the same time. We finally got to the part when we shaped it. After taking it off the wheel we let it dry, then fired it. We then chose from lots of glazes. I chose Rata red. It is like a really dark red with a bit of brown. I then let the glaze go into the inside.

When we started to make our pots I was excited snd nervous because I have never used a pottery wheel before, but it was definitely my favourite part. After we had finished moulding our bowls we learnt about glazing. I chose colbalt blue. I had to mix the powder and water in a big bucket and once it was no longer lumpy I got to dip the bowl in, preferably on an angle. I am really happy how it turned out.
