Eco-Action begins at Heaton

Jarrad Brown —

Heaton becomes an Eco-Action Sattelite Nursery, joining the movement to regenerate our native bush in the red zone.

Over the last term, the extension science group has been hard at work clearing an unused area at Heaton to establish a nursery to support the work of Eco-Action Nursery Trust. The group cleared, leveled and installed weedmat in the nursery area prior to lockdown. They have now completed the job of re-potting 500 seedlings into larger bags. In two years, these seedlings will be mature enough to be uplifted from our Heaton nursery and planted in a native corridor in the Red Zone.

The Eco-Action group holds regular planting days so that any member of the public who would like to plant a native tree can take part in the project. The dates for public planting days are published on their website http://www.eco-action.co.nz/.
