Heaton Students participate in Chess Tournament

Joan Green —

Twelve Heaton Chess Club members showed off their skills and sportsmanship while competing in the Canterbury Interschool Chess Tournament.

Hi! Our names are Matthew, George, Sam and Ali from Room 6. We are part of the Chess Club, which meets every Thursday lunchtime in Room 12. Everyone is welcome to join us for a game of chess.

We and eight other Heaton students all took part in the Canterbury Interschool Chess Tournament last term. It's a regional tournament, so students come from as far as Waihi to compete. There were 200 students from Years 1 to 8. For some of us, it was our first chess tournament, while others had been in tournaments before.

When we first arrived, everyone was gathered and the organisers explained what would be happening. Each team got to play five games unless you had a bye.

The Heaton teams won some games and lost some. Overall, everyone enjoyed it and we thought it was a good experience to be part of. Thank you to our chaperone, Mrs. Boyle, who made it possible for us to attend and took these great photos.
