Canterbury District Health Board.  Get ready for flu season – protect your whānau and community.  Colder weather also brings along a nasty passenger – the flu.

As you may have seen in the media, it’s been a terrible flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, which is a possible predictor for what we may see here.  Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children and healthy children are the major cause of the spread of the virus in the community. Around 80 percent of people infected show no or minimal symptoms so you can spread the flu bug without knowing you have it – and the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

Canterbury District Health Board is urging you to protect your whānau and the wider community by getting your flu shot as soon as possible. This year’s vaccines have been specially formulated for New Zealand and are expected to offer protection against the strain that was circulating in the Northern Hemisphere.

While flu shots are free for under 18s, they’re available for anyone for a fee from a doctor, nurse or some pharmacists. You or your whānau may qualify for a free shot as well – check out www.flufree.co.nz for more info and flu facts.

NumberWorks’nWords has been nominated by Ngai Tahu iwi authority, as an accredited provider of tuition (Maths and English) for some years now. While some local children take advantage of this, we believe there will be many others who are eligible for assistance, but they are unaware of it or need guidance to take up this opportunity. It can be used for children who need extension, or those who need a boost of confidence or remedial work.

Ngai Tahu iwi will pay for one term of tuition (usually ten weeks) paid to the value of $470 plus GST ($540.50) each financial year.

To qualify for this grant….

- Children must be 8 years or over and registered with Ngai Tahu.

- Approval for tuition is granted by the Ngai Tahu Learner Support Fund Administrator (Awhina Scott) upon receipt of an application form filled in by the child’s parent or guardian – prior to the term for which the grant is applied for.

- The parent or caregiver contacts me at NumberWorks’nWords to arrange a time for me to assess the child and plan an individualised programme of tuition in either Maths or English.

- Parents will be kept informed about their child’s progress on a regular basis. I am keen to work with the child’s class teacher if possible to set learning outcomes which will relate to the classroom plan as well. I usually do this via a phone call or email.

The Ngai Tahu website has application forms to download which can be found at http://ngaitahu.iwi.nz/whanau/opportunities/tahua-taunaki-akonga-learner-support-fund/. For your convenience I have attached the application form to this email which you might like to print and have available for parents to fill in and send away. I have also included an information sheet about our services for parents.

I suggest a piece in your newsletter or regular emails out to parents might help more parents become aware of this opportunity too. A suggestion would be…
