Heaton gains awards at Speaking for the Planet Competition

Janiene Hill —

There were a number of students who particitpated in this competition in Tūranga on Friday the 1st of July. Heaton recieved some excellent results.

The speaking for the Planet competition is an annual competition run by Environment Canterbury where students are able to present speeches, spoken word, a movie or visual art and perform an impromptu drama based on an environmental theme which this year was 'Make Peace with Nature'

This year we had three students Melissa Irvine, Sophia O'Leary, Alex Binnie involved in the Spoken word finals. We also had one student, Evie Ryan who was in the speech final. Both Melissa Irvine and Evie Ryan recieved an award of Highly Commneded.

During the afternoon, our drama group of Evie Ryan, Isabella Kerr, Ashlyn Morrison, Brooke Robertson and Zahra Jafri were given just over an hour to prepare an impromptu drama on the topic provided by the judges. The topic this year was 'Only one Earth. What if there were two? How could we do better?'

Our group brainstormed and rehearsed their performance together and then performed a seven minute drama. The Heaton girls showed clear diction, character and made better links to the theme which was why they were awarded first place. They were given some amazing prizes including vouchers to Spotlight, Rollick'in Gelato, and trees to plant in their gardens or at school.

This was a very educational, fun afternoon for our competing students and they thorougly enjoyed the opportunity. Our thanks goes to environment Canterbury and it's sponsers for hosting this event.
