Congratulations Georgia!

Office @ Heaton —

Georgia represented New Zealand at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. It was an amazing achievement by Georgia - Room 14, which required a lot of time, dedication and skill. Here is Georgia’s account of her trip. We would also like to congratulate Georgia on winning a St Andrew's College scholarship for 2019.

During Term 3, I was lucky enough to represent New Zealand at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band has been planning to play at the world pipe band championship for almost two years. The amount of fundraising that the members have been doing is massive as the trip was very expensive. I worked hard to fundraise thousands of dollars to be part of this team and attend the championships.

Once we arrived in Glasgow we had a week for sightseeing and rehearsals. The competition took place in the Glasgow Green, right in the centre of Glasgow. There were over 8,000 pipe band members that were competing. The competition was intense. There were 5 bands that came from New Zealand and only one pipe band made it through to the finals, that was the Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band, which I was a member of.

Our band came 2nd overall in the qualifying round. The drummers came 1st in the qualifying and the pipers came 3rd in the qualifying. It came down to the top 12 bands in the final, the band was extremely stoked with qualifying. Our band only had 1 hour to prepare for the finals which put a lot of pressure on us. At the end of the day we found out the result, overall we came 7th out of 25 bands which was an outstanding result for us.

This was an opportunity of a lifetime to compete against Pipe Bands from around the world.
