Art Extension trip to Tūranga

Fiona Taylor —

Tuesday 10th May. The aim of our trip was to learn about the Creation pūrākau and to study the artwork 'Kākano Puananī' – 'Airborne Seeds'. Our research will help us to design our own ceramic artwork based on the creation pūtākau. The name 'Kākano Puananī' is intended to be inclusive. Our ancestors or even ourselves are all seeds that have travelled to New Zealand.

As soon as we got to Tūranga we received a warm welcome from Maatakiwi, one of the best guides in Tūranga! We were taken to one of the rooms to be told a beautiful story of the creation of Aotearoa. It made us feel interested and grateful, as we now know about the Māori history of our country. It was very important to know this, as we need to know about the stories and artworks of our beautiful whenua, so that we can keep the stories and language alive.

At Tūranga we were able to learn about our country's history, and see a beautiful artwork, as well as meeting very nice people who were willing to teach us, and give us ideas. I am very grateful that I went on the trip, as it opened my eyes to the history and creation of Aotearoa.

I really enjoyed going to Tūranga, It was really fun and fascinating to see how the South Island was formed and how the Aoraki and his Brothers froze and eventually formed into mountains (Mt Cook).

I have enjoyed the past Extension Art lessons so far this term. It was so much fun going to Tūranga and learning about Aoraki and his brothers and how the South Island was formed. I am excited to continue learning about Aoraki and all his stories.

When I went to Tūranga, I learnt about a Māori story that the lady told us.  She also told us about Māori patterns on the wall and they were like the Māori brothers.
